“In all circumstances, give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.”
This Sunday’s Gospel is the story of the ten lepers. Jesus healed all ten, but only one returns to give thanks and glorify God. The Alleluia verse presents St. Paul’s teaching that, in Christ Jesus, we are called to give thanks in all circumstances. We can forget to give thanks and glory to God when our circumstances are good. But the challenge is even greater for those who choose to be his disciples. Are we able to trust radically in God’s ultimate wisdom and eternal goodness even in adverse circumstances? This is not likely without the strength and love of Jesus within. As St. Paul (who suffered much) says, this is the will of God in Christ Jesus.
